Overview and History of SRS
Slough Refugee Support was founded in 1997 when a group of volunteers recognised the need for specific support for those newly arriving in the area, fleeing persecution in their home countries.
During these ten years
-
our drop-in advice service helped 2850 refugee households with problems ranging through health, education, benefits, immigration, legal and housing
-
our development project provided welcome, friendship and many activities to aid integration and resettlement, such as English and Citizenship classes, sewing, football and an allotment
-
our Job Club helped 114 refugees into jobs and training, and 21 into volunteering
In addition
-
we have provided a service of information to organisations and employers on refugee issues
-
we have involved and trained 250 volunteers who have contributed to the harmony and well-being of the many communities in Slough
-
we have benefited from funding partnerships including Big Lottery Fund, BAA, Lloyds TSB, Nationwide and Global Grants
SRS now has two full-time and six part-time and sessional workers. Our board of trustees has eleven members, with a further eleven sub-committee members, five of whom are users of our services.
